As someone who loves to be outside, stay active, and spend time with my family, I’ve found that hiking in Southwest Virginia is one of the best ways to combine all three. In a world where most of us are plugged in and glued to screens—whether it’s a computer, tablet, or phone—how refreshing is it to step away, soak in some sunlight, and breathe in fresh air? Not only does this benefit us as adults, but it also has a profound impact on our children.

The Positive Impact of Outdoor Activity on Children

My wife, Kristin, and I have noticed a significant improvement in our three children’s behavior (ages 3, 5, and 13) when we spend time outdoors. Research supports this observation, showing that outdoor play and exposure to nature can enhance mood, reduce stress, and improve focus in children (Strife & Downey, 2009). According to a study published in Frontiers in Psychology, children who spend more time outside demonstrate better cognitive functioning and social interactions (Chawla, 2015). Hiking, in particular, provides a mix of physical exertion and mental relaxation that screens simply cannot replicate.

Hiking isn’t just good for kids—it’s a great way for the whole family to stay active. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week for adults and at least 60 minutes per day for children (CDC, 2022). Hiking offers a fun and engaging way to meet these guidelines while also strengthening muscles, improving cardiovascular health, and boosting mental well-being.

Additionally, exposure to natural sunlight helps regulate sleep patterns by increasing melatonin production, which is essential for a good night’s rest (Figueiro & Rea, 2010). I’ve personally found that after a long hike, our kids not only behave better but also sleep better—something every parent can appreciate!

One of the things that makes hiking in Southwest Virginia so special is the breathtaking scenery. From the stunning views at McAfee Knob to the peaceful forests of the Jefferson National Forest, the region offers an abundance of trails for all skill levels. Whether it’s a short walk along the Cascades or a more challenging trek up to Dragon’s Tooth, there’s something for everyone.

Being surrounded by nature allows us to disconnect from technology and reconnect with each other. It creates opportunities for meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and moments of awe that simply can’t be replicated through a screen.
